The city of 90 thousand inhabitants was inhabited by numerous folks for thousands years. It was set up on the cross roads of the amber roads conducted from the Adriatic to the Baltic sea, by the Roman emperor Claudius in 43. The city was called Colonia Claudia SAVARIA, and soon it became a flourishing center of the late roman provincia Pannonia Superior.
The county seat of Vas county raised on the place of the Savaria city established by the emperor Claudius about 50 on the cross roads of the Amber Road. The remainds of the roman times buildings can be visited in Romkert and in Iseum.
In Szombathely Saint Martin was born, one of the most famous saint of the middle ages. He is commemorated yearly on Saint Martin day. The most valuable monuments of the middle ages monuments include the Saint Martin church and the Franciscan church.
The county seat was moved to Szombathely from Vasvár in 1578 because of the Turks danger. The real development of the city started after establishing of episcopate in 1777. The baroque style center of the city was formed during the times of the first bishop Szily János. From that times a Bishop Hall, the Cathedral and the buildings of Seminary stayed behind. In the main square of the city some, built in the 18-19th century, civil house can be seen. The house number 40 won an international renown because it was inhabited by Leopold Bloom the hero of the Ulysess, written by James Joyce.
It is worth to visit: the Savaria Museum (archeologigal exhibitions, ancient ruins), the Smidt Museum (a private collection of old furnitures and other usesable objects) and the Art Gallery (modern art). In the open-air museum (Skanzen) are presented old folk buildings from the couty. It is also woth to visit Kamon Arboretum with the richest in the country collection of trees and with 2500 kinds of different plants.
Some of the cultural programmes of the county seat: Spring Festival, Szent György day's handicraft Fair, Savaria International Dance Contest, Leopold Bloom's Day, Bartók Seminarium and Contest, Savaria Carnival, Pannon Autumn.
The places where something happened to the Hungarians or the places where the Hungarians created something important became a very famous one. That happened to Jak, which is famous from its church and abbey. Everybody knows, that there is a late roman style church built in XIII century, having two towers what unique in Hungary.
The sometime benedictine, nowadays Saint George parish church is the most important roman ages architecture monument in Hungary. The most precious part of the church built in the 13th century, is its front door and the decorative group of sculptures on the main facade. The remains of the Turkish times renewals and rebuilding were removed during the renewal works conducted by Frigyes Schulek, so nowadays the church can be seen in its approximately original form.
The city has fot its name from the Arpad times castle, which can be seen nowadays too on the Óház-hill. The setting up of the city is attributable to Henry Kőszegi. He and his sons, they built a city with the regular system of the streets and a castle in the north-west corner of the city. The most significant historical episode was the blokade in 1532. That time the castle was defended by Miklós Jurisics against the military troops of the I. Suleiman Turkish sultan. The center of Kőszeg has one of the richest monuments collection in Hungary.

A picturesque city rich of monuments. The roman ages ruins are hidden deep under the city. The northern gate of the city was defended by the Fire Tower, which became a symbol of the town. The famous Stornó house gained its name from the former chimney-sweep later became renovator and art collector Ferenc Stornó. The main square is dominated by the grey friars church, so-called Goat church. In the middle of the square there is a blessed trinity baroque column. The gothic style synagogue is quite rare in other part of Europe too. In the southern part of the city on the amphitheatre of hills, in Lővérek there are lots of wonderful cottages. It is excellent place for trips and almost every path conducts to the Károly hill and then to the 23 m heigh scenic point.
