PROGRAMS IN AND AROUND THE TOWN

Jazzdob Historical Collection - Cegléd, Szabadság tér

On 27 November 2000, a drum museum was opened in Cegléd from the collection of Sándor Kármán's instruments.
For 30 years he has been a devoted fan of drums. In the late 60's he started corresponding with the world's leading percussion companies. In a few years he gathered so much material that his first stop was the exhibition "The History of the Drum" in 1979. This exhibition aimed to show everything from African drums, through war drums, shaman drums and snare drums, to the most modern electric drum synthesizers of the time.

The museum would both commemorate the legendary instruments, famous drummers and drummaking masters of the past, and provide a living medium for the promotion of percussion culture. Its state-of-the-art stage in the chamber hall would be the venue for special music lessons, percussion demonstrations, drum history lectures and video screenings. Its library is also a research library, with thousands of catalogues, hundreds of sheet music and reference books, videos and CDs on drums and percussion.

Kossuth Museum - Cegléd, Múzeum utca

Founded in 1917, the Kossuth Museum in Cegléd is one of the largest public collections in Pest County.
The founders chose the name of the museum not only to commemorate Lajos Kossuth, but also the whole family, since Ferenc Kossuth was also a member of the family and was closely connected to the political and social life of Cegléd.

The Kossuth Museum is one of the oldest institutions in Cegléd; it has been collecting and preserving local history, ethnography, numismatics, fine arts and archaeology for decades. With its diverse collections, varied exhibitions, publications, varied events and friendship with the museum, it has an indispensable mission in the town today.

Blaskovich Museum - Tápiószele

The Blaskovich Museum in Tápiószele is the only mansion museum in the country to have survived the Second World War intact.

The neoclassical mansion in the middle of the botanically interesting park was built in 1906. This noble manor house was bought by György Blaskovich (1878-1960), a lawyer, and his brother János Blaskovich (1883-1967), who graduated from the Agricultural Academy. The two brothers moved to Tápiószel in 1912.

The history of the museum in Tápiószele started on two threads. One is the archaeological activity of the Blaskovich brothers. In 1923, on their initiative, the Hungarian National Museum launched an excavation in Tápiószentmárton, on a hill rising next to the Sőregi road, during which the famous "golden stag", an electron shield ornament in the shape of a deer gilded in fire, was found in a Scythian princely tomb. During their archaeological research, they also discovered the Scythian cemetery at Tapiószele, where archaeologists from the National Museum excavated between 1938 and 1953. In 1947, the museum collection of the MNM was organised in the Blaskovich Mansion to secure the finds found there.

Kossuth Statue - Cegléd, Szabadság Square

The central figure on the three-figure sculpture by sculptor János Horvay is of course Kossuth himself, while the other two figures on the pedestal are a young soldier holding a flag and a father bidding the soldier farewell.

The statue of Kossuth in the middle of Szabadság Square is one of the most attractive features of the city's Kossuth cult.On the eve of the 100th anniversary of Kossuth's birth on 18 September 1902, this beautiful sculpture by sculptor János Horvay was unveiled in a ceremony to mark the centenary of his birth.

The most beautiful part of the sculpture is Kossuth's head, which Ferenc Kossuth, son of Lajos Kossuth, helped the sculptor to create. The beauty of the farewell side figure is also unforgettably impressive. The elderly parent was modelled by the artist on Sámuel Lédeczi, a man from Cegléd. A replica of the statue has been in New York since 1928.

Kossuth balcony - Cegléd, Szabadság tér

The balcony of the former Green Tree Inn in Bratislava was moved to its current location in 1996 in the garden of the Reformed Church of Cegléd

Exploring the Kossuth monuments will take you to the Kossuth balcony in the garden of the Reformed Church of the Reformed Church. These were the stones of the former Green Tree Inn in Bratislava, from which Kossuth introduced Lajos Batthyány, the country's first responsible prime minister. The balcony was restored to its present location and placed on 24 September, the year of the millennium.

Reformed Church - Cegléd, Szabadság Square

In the centre of Cegléd, in the middle of Szabadság Square, stands a Greek cross-shaped church building with a dome.

In the other main square of the town, Szabadság tér, one of the symbols of the town, the Reformed Church of Cegléd, stands in front of us. Designed by József Hild and later rebuilt, it is the largest Reformed church in Central Europe, built in the neoclassical style between 1835 and 1870. Its foundation stone was laid in 1835, consecrated in 1871 and rebuilt between 1895-96. Its dome burnt down in 1936, when it was built higher than the original.

In May 2002 a new electronic organ was added to the church. Péter Albert, an electrical engineer from Miskolc, designed and built the 63-stop organ with 4 manual pedals. The sound of the organ perfectly meets the needs of performers of baroque and modern music. From the opening concert onwards, regular concerts will also be held in the Great Church.
It is a landmark building in the city. The church has a capacity of 2400 people. Its two-towered main façade has a tympanum narthex supported by four ionic columns projecting from the towers. The inscription on a panel below the tympanum reads 'Come unto me, all of you'.

Dózsa statue - Cegléd, Kossuth Square

The statue of Dózsa on Kossuth Square is a traditional Cegléd link to György Dózsa, the leader of the Peasants' War of 1514.
To commemorate this, the present two-figure Dózsa monument was unveiled with a national ceremony on 25 June 1972. The statue is the work of Kossuth Prize-winning sculptor József Somogyi.

Holy Cross Catholic Church - Cegléd, Kossuth Square

On Kossuth Square, you can see the neoclassical church dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, a chapel in honour of Saint Anne stood on the site of the church. In 1368, Queen Elisabeth donated the town of Cegléd to the Clarissa nuns of Óbuda. The present church was built on the site of a Gothic church demolished in 1821.
It was designed by Ferenc Homályossy (Tunkel), a master builder from Szolnok. The church was consecrated on 31 August 1827. The high altar was made by Lőrinc Dunaiszky in 1830. In the same year, József Schöfft, a painter from Pest, painted a picture of the high altar depicting the Calvary scene.

Lutheran Church - Cegléd, Bercsényi utca

The slender-towered, proportionately sized building on today's Szabadság tér is one of the most beautiful public buildings in the town.

The other dominant feature of Szabadság tér is the slender-towered neo-Gothic Evangelical Church, designed by the Budapest architect Ottó Sztehlo. First the basilica row on either side of the church was completed, and then on 31 November 1896 the new tabernacle of God was consecrated. Its altarpiece was painted by the artist Károly Jakoby, and in front of the altar is a baptismal font.
The exterior is in the shape of a castle, referring to the Evangelical Church's greeting: 'Strong is the castle of our God'. Founded in 1802, this long-established congregation, though somewhat diminished in numbers and in spirit, holds services for some 340 evangelicals at 10 a.m. on Sundays and feast days.
